So the recent big hoopla has been the announcement of the impending 1 billionth download of an iPhone / iPod touch application. That of course is a lot of downloads for a short time. However in all this time Apple hasn’t been the most forthcoming with data regarding the popularity of these applications. Sure you have the top ranked apps each month, but that list typically changes so often it’s hard to gauge what has been able to survive the test of time (and ultimately make money). Well, luckily for us the benevolent company that is Apple recently released a list of the All Time Top 20 iPhone applications for both the paid and free category. Unfortunately, however, you’ll need iTunes to view this list as they weren’t willing to just create a webpage that listed these apps. Thanks Apple. I love using iTunes!
I decided to take it upon myself to list out the All Time Top 20 iPhone Paid Applications. I wanted to capture not just the name, but any additional information that sheds some light on theses applications. In addition I wanted to add some other metrics (like the number of comments or reviews) to see just how popular these applications are…and make random guesses as to how much money they actually made. I actually accomplish this amazing feat of revenue calculation by assuming that only 5% of the people who buy a game actually go online and rate the application (via the 5 star rating system). Where did I get 5%? It just sounded nice. So take my numbers with a grain of salt, but it’s better than the information that’s currently out there… which is NOTHING. Away we go!!!!!!
Here is some summary information about the Top 20 Paid Applications of all time:
