A good example of this is Lady Gaga’s Poker Face.  In the song she has a verse, “I’ll get him hot, show him what I got.”  Here you can watch this verse below:

Anyway, when I heard first this song I always thought Lady Gaga was saying “I’ll get him HARD, show him what I got.”  To which I would ask other people, “Why is Lady Gaga so naughty??”  How could they let such explicit lyrics on American radio waves??

Of course I always thought I was the only one who thought this way…that is until I found this video.  The video is of a Taiwanese pop star performing Lady Gaga’s Poker face on some kind of reality TV show competition (I’m guessing like American Idol, but for Taiwan, which would actually make it Taiwanese Idol…).  She really gets into the part: dies her hair white, wears the Gaga outfit, and even applies Gaga makeup.  I mention all this to point out that this is a serious competition and not just some silly person on youtube singing covers of Poker Face.   This is well produced.  See for yourself what lyric she ends up singing:

That’s right folks not only can you hear her say “hard,” but it’s also in the English subtitled lyrics that the show includes!

Perhaps the official lyrics are not so official anymore and this was all just a ploy by Lady Gaga to get naughty lyrics on the airwaves.  Nice one Gaga…nice one!

I’d like to think I’m pretty good at listening to lyrics in a song, but lately I’ve been realizing what I hear is not exactly what the artist is singing.  Here are some song samples with what I hear being sung versus what the “official” lyrics are supposed to be.

1.  The Killers – Human




I Hear:  are we human, or are we denser?

Official Lyrics:  are we human, or are we dancer?

Comments:  I’m thinking to myself, no it can’t be “dancer” cause if it was it wouldn’t be grammatically correct.   He would have to sing “are we human (plural form)? or are we dancers (plural form)?”  Thus maintaining verb tense agreement!  Apparently the Killers are above grammar law.

2.  Rihanna – Disturbia

I Hear:  [blah blah] the story life [blah blah blah] the story life [blah blah blah] the story life

Official Lyrics:  [blah blah] disturbia [blah blah blah] disturbia [blah blah blah] disturbia

Comments:  What the hell is “disturbia”?  Is it a disturbing suburbia?  “The story life” makes so much more sense to me.  It’s about how a person has a story life…as in a fairy tale story life (like Cinderella and the Prince living happily ever after).

I like urban dictionary’s current 6th definition and example for disturbia:

“The use of animal corpses and various other unpleasant items, during intercourse amongst multiple men.” ex.  Graham can’t wait to have some Disturbia with Paul tonight

3.  Fall Out Boy – Dance Dance

I Hear:  Dis-tance!  Falling apart to her time Dis-tance! And these are the lives you love to lead…

Official Lyrics:  Dance, dance! We’re falling apart to half time,  Dance, dance, And these are the lives you’d love to lead…

Comments:  I really don’t understand Fall Out Boy’s lyrics…and apparently I’m not alone.  There are whole youtube playlists dedicated to Fall Out Boy Misheard Lyrics.  For a good laugh check out Fall Out Boy’s Dance Dance Misheard lyrics on youtube.   Apparently the uploader heard “Ted’s Pants” instead of “Dance Dance.”

4.  Lady GaGa – Poker Face

I Hear:  He’ll read my, He’ll read my, no he can’t read my poker face (She’s got no love no body) x2

Official Lyrics:  Can’t read my, Can’t read my, no he can’t read my poker face (She’s got to love nobody) x2

Comments:  Considering “gaga” is what we say to babies and infants (as in “googoo gaga”) it’s not surprising these lyrics aren’t easy to be heard (or I’m just hard of hearing).   Maybe I’ll start a career as pop singer Gentleman GooGoo and join up with her to become hit pop sensation duo Lady and Gentleman GooGoo GaGa!

5.  Kanye West – Heartless

I Hear:  How could you be so Horny?

Official Lyrics:  How could you be so Heartless?

Comments:  I really thought Kanye was singing about how some girl was really “horny.”  The stuff on the radio doesn’t surprise me anymore especially when Lil’ Jon can sing about “To the sweat drips down my balls…”  So this “how could you be so horny?” seemed quite tame to me.

6.  Estelle – American Boy

I Hear:  You’ll be my American Boy…TELL THEM WOB WOBBLER!

Official Lyrics:  You’ll be my American Boy…Let them know wagwan blud!

Comments:  Everytime I hear this song I can’t wait for this one line in the whole song because it’s only spoken once the whole song and I really think she’s saying “Tell them wob wobbler”.  Let me explain.   Estelle is singing a “duet” with Kanye.  She’s given Kanye a nickname, “Wob Wobbler.” So when she says “Tell them wob wobbler” she is simply asking Kanye to start singing again.  Makes perfect sense, right?  If you don’t like my explanation this explanation might make you happier…

7.  Lady GaGa – Just Dance

I Hear:  Don’t slow! Drive it clean it like some plead it spend the last-o…in your PACO

Official Lyrics:  Don’t slow!  Drive it, clean it, lights out, bleed it, spend the lasto, in your pocko

Comments:  GaGa’s back again with more nonsense.  The song is about dancing, but then all of sudden she’s talking about driving?  Well, if you can’t beat them, join them.  I hereby declare I will wear a Pocko Protector everywhere I go…even until my lasto days.
